Nicky Shearsby

Born in England, breaking into serious novel writing wasn’t something Nicky began in earnest until taking early retirement. She spent two decades running businesses in graphic design, magazine publication and web development before setting up an organic vegan skincare manufacturing company. She has written several non-fiction books including training courses on nutrition, skincare, self-help coaching and business mentoring, and is trained in psychology, life coaching, counselling and nutrition.

First of all, thank you so much to SRL Publishing for sending me an eARC of For the Condemned.

I actually didn’t realise until partway through that this was the fourth book in the Flanigan Files series! However, I found it surprisingly easy to pick up as a standalone. I’m sure reading the previous three books would have given me more background on Newton and his story, but there was enough information within this book for me to understand his character and what he’d been through.

Eugene was probably the character I found most intriguing. Despite everything surrounding him, there was an honesty to him that made me want to understand him, particularly as more of his incredibly troubled upbringing was revealed.

Newton, meanwhile, is absolutely crippled by grief and genuinely struggling with life. Then this unusual case comes along and gives him something to focus on, while also beginning to challenge him in ways he wasn’t expecting.

The story constantly had me questioning where it was going. I came up with several different possible outcomes along the way, and it kept me gripped as I tried to work out exactly what was happening.

I’m deliberately not saying much more about the plot because this is definitely one of those books where it’s better to go in without knowing too much. There are plenty of ups and downs, twists and turns, and moments that make you question what you think you know.

This was my first book by Nicky Shearsby, but it definitely won’t be my last. In fact, I think I may need to go backwards now and read the first three! 😂
